Certain freshwater turtles use a process called cloacal respiration.
They absorb oxygen through a specialized opening, allowing them to stay underwater for long periods—especially during winter.
It’s not their main way of breathing, but it works well enough to survive when surfacing isn’t an option.
Evolution took a strange route here.
